OUR STORY

Shortly after WWII, father-and-son duo, Jacob and Sam Solomon, started U.S. Army Surplus Store in Portland, Oregon. Surplus stores are the roots of many outdoor stores, (seriously, who doesn’t love paracord, folding shovels, and the durable goods designed for our hard working military). The family started selling military ski gear and winter apparel which evoloved into carrying ski and winter gear for the growing industry. In 1957, the U.S. Outdoor store was born with the goal of outfitting outdoor enthusiasts in the area.

For decades, the Solomon family ran U.S. Outdoor Store and moving into the iconic downtown Portland location in 1986, helping enthusiasts gear up and enjoy everything the outdoors have to offer. The shop’s reach went international in 1996 when USOUTDOOR.com became one of the first outdoor stores to have an online presence. Since then, we’ve been providing great outdoor gear and service across the globe.

Through several generations, U.S. Outdoor has remained committed to maintaining the in-person expertise and familiarity of a local shop. Since Ed and Carrie Ariniello bought the shop in 2017, allowing the Solomons to retire, they proudly have maintained the locally-owned and family-run culture that has distinguished U.S. Outdoor for over six decades; bringing their own lifetime of outdoor passion and expertise to the shop.
