You are considering learning a new language. Stop considering and do it.
There are many benefits of learning a foreign language. And even if you never quite master that second language, you will learn enough to get the gist of what a foreigner is saying, which is far better than being left out in the dark, particularly when it comes to doing business.
Here are the top 10 reasons why you need to sign up for that foreign language class today:
10. Swearing
You can curse furiously, vehemently, in another language and no one will be the wiser. Merde! That means …. “poop” in French. Try it. The MERDE my dad says! Aaah, that felt good!
9. Keep track of travel budgets
You will be the star of the European backpacking tour that you, and your friends have decided to take. People will be impressed and, yes, will rely on you to translate for them and guide them and help them figure out exactly how much they’re paying for that interesting tchotchke. You can prevent your friends from being over-charged in a country where they don’t understand the money exchange rate.
8. Talk with the in-laws
You can speak fluently to your Russian mother-in-law. Okay, maybe that’s not the best example of why you should learn another language but learning a second or third language is going to open doors for you and allow you to communicate with people that you could only nod and smile at before.
7. Teaching languages to your kids
Children who have parents who speak more than one language have an advantage over the rest of the children who aren’t exposed to another language when they are young. Learning a second language is going to benefit your children (or future children) in addition to benefiting yourself.
6. Read the menu
You can actually understand what’s written on the menu.
5. Skip the subtitles
You can go to foreign movies and not have to rely on sub-titles.
4. Be seductive
Imagine how impressed a new gal or guy is going to be if you effortlessly slip into speaking French at that charming bistro where you are wining and dining. There IS something quite seductive about a person who is bilingual or multi-lingual. Many have been seduced based on a foreign accent alone. That is something to consider.
3. Act innocent
If you are in a situation where you don’t want to let on that you understand what’s going on—such as being interrogated by the cops— simply slip into your second language and profess in that language that you do not speak English (or the language of the moment) or understand it. You’ll have to throw in some dramatic facial and hand gestures for emphasis. “Je ne parle pas francais.” (French).“Ich spreche kein Deutsch” or “Ich kann kein Deutsch sprechen” (German). “Juh han-gook mal mot hae yo.” (Korean).
2. Be an interpreter
You can become an interpreter. That particular kind of job pays well. Heck, the United Nations might want to hire you or the CIA or Donald Trump!
1. Sell your bilingual skills
