Plan a pep rally

Show your school spirit by holding a pep rally.
There is nothing more fun than to walk into a pep rally and to see a gymnasium full of cheering students, music blaring, cheerleaders jumping, and everyone feeling the camaraderie of being a part of something truly great. But as any club sponsor will tell you, a great deal of coordination is necessary to plan a pep rally. With patience and focus, you can plan one that is sure to spur your school’s teams on to victory!
- Decide on a theme. The best pep rallies have some sort of unique atmosphere that make students feel as if they were really watching a show. You may decide to go with a periodic theme, such as the 50s or the 70s; both of these decades have great hair and clothing possibilities. A few of the senior players could dress up, and it is always fun to have a few faculty members dress up as well. And, of course, the kids absolutely love to see the principal in costume! Another idea is to go with a theme such as nerds?in this type of pep rally, the nerds would be stand-ins for the opposing team! These themes work even better if they can be worked into a Spirit Day on your campus; that way, everyone can get involved by dressing up in costume!
- Contact some willing faculty members. Most clubs do not plan a pep rally any farther in advance than the Monday before; make sure to contact the faculty members and administrators whom you would like to have participate. It is best to keep several possibilities in mind, due to scheduling conflicts. Remember: don’t miss the opportunity to involve some of the most popular principals!~
- Pump up your drum line. No matter how mediocre your athletic teams may be, an enthusiastic drum line can really get your crowd going. Most bands have some really talented percussionists on their drums; and if these musicians can learn to toss up their sticks a little and incorporate some easy steps into their routine, they will be the highlight of the band!
- Establish a competition between the classes. Students love to compete with other grade levels?by starting a competition at the pep rally, you will establish a safe environment for this friendly rivalry. A great way to do this is to have a student or two from every grade involved in the focal skit, or to simply have a cheer-off at the end of the rally to decide which class has the most spirit. Just make sure that the senior don’t always win, or the freshmen always lose. That takes away from the spirit of the competition! Another suggestion is to have a Spirit Stick (this can simply be a decorated paper towel roll) that gets passed on week to week to the winner. It will soon become a very coveted item.
It takes a lot of effort and organization to plan a pep rally that is fun, safe, and effective. Your teams will greatly appreciate your effort to encourage them, and the rest of the student body usually enjoys a relaxing time of screaming and music! Remember to give all of the security and attending faculty members information about safety exits and procedures, just in case the unforeseen happens. Most likely, everyone will walk (or, hopefully dance) out of the rally filled with school spirit and ready for the rest of the day!
