Pizza. It’s our go-to food as a country. Working late? Order in pizza. Movie night? Pizza is probably on the menu. Pizza shows up at date nights, busy family nights and grab-something-on-the-way-home nights.
But what do we want to eat on all those slices of cheesy, sauced deliciousness? Of course, some of use are leading the way to new and creative tastes with things like kale and quinoa pizza, cauliflower pizza and gluten-free, vegan cheese pizza. But for most Americans, the old favorites are still the most popular.
Here’s a run-down of the ten most popular pizza toppings.
10. Extra cheese
If some cheese is good, a whole bunch more is even better. Or at least that’s what we say when we place orders for all those extra cheese pizzas. Mozzarella leads the way in pizza cheese choices, followed by Provolone, Cheddar, Parmigiano-Reggiano, Romano and Ricotta.
9. Pepperoni
Those small rounds of spicy meat are always at the top of the list for pizza toppings. Despite its Italian-sounding name, this spicy, meaty sausage is a purely American invention.
Every year, people in this country consume about 251,770,000 pounds of pepperoni, mostly on pizza. New vegetarian versions exist, too, so even non-meat eaters can now order this beloved topping.
8. Mushrooms
Mushrooms are one of those toppings that seems to appeal to almost everyone. Vegetarians love having such a flavorful topping, while meat eaters enjoy the way mushrooms work with sausage, hamburger or ham.
7. Black olives
The salty, tangy taste of cured black olives is a perfect match for pizza’s rich, spicy flavors. Some like their pizza olives whole, some like the sliced, and others prefer them finely chopped. But anyway they’re prepared, they’re a popular choice alone or with other toppings like roasted tomatoes, mushrooms or sausage.
6. Onions
Onions on a pizza can cook quickly in the oven, or can be slow cooked until they’re sweet and soft then added to the pizza for that final burst of cooking. Either way, cooked onions have been one of the most popular choices for decades. And if current orders are a guide, they’re still earning their top ten spot.
5. Pineapple
At first glance, pineapple doesn’t sound like a good choice as a pizza topping. After all, it’s a fruit…and fruit and pizza don’t mix! But somehow, pineapple is the one exception. This juicy fruit can stand alone, or work with peppers, olives, sausage, ham or jalapenos.
4. Crumbled sausage
Crumbled, spicy Italian sausage is a given when it comes to the top ten pizza toppings. Unlike some meats, sausage can stand up to the intense heat of the pizza oven without drying out or turning to leather. And the spicy seasons add another layer of flavor to any pizza, whether as a single topping or part of an “everything” pizza.
3. Green pepper
Not only do green peppers taste delicious on pizza, they look pretty too. It doesn’t really matter which it is… people just keep selecting this veggie for their pizzas. Roasted red peppers are starting to give green peppers a run for their money, but for now, the classic greens still have it.
2. Ham
On its own, or paired with pineapple, green peppers or other toppings, ham is a pizza classic that still rates high marks from pizza fans across the country. Some people prefer the ham to be cooked under the cheese, while others like sprinkling cooked ham over the top after the pie comes out of the oven.
1. Just the way it is
According to food industry experts, the most common choice in pizza toppings is…none. A whopping 37% of pizzas ordered are plain, cheese pizzas. The classic combination of tomato sauce, olive oil, cheese and herbs on a crust is apparently the perfect version of pizza for most of us.
