Examples of how to write a two weeks notice letter
Is it mandatory to give two weeks notice of resignation? If you work in the U.S., the answer depends on whether or not you agreed to do so by contract. You don’t have to give two weeks notice of resignation in any form, if you’re not working under a contract that says otherwise and you work in a state that upholds the Employment At-Will Doctrine. (Virtually all states do to some degree.) You may just walk out the door if you wish. That’s because employment at will essentially means that, under common law and in the absence of a contract to the contrary, employment is presumed to be voluntary and indefinite for both employees and employers.
However, common courtesy and your good name generally mandate such notification. Check your company’s policy manual to be sure. If it is, there are a lot of articles to assist you in writing a letter of resignation, including this article! If you don’t follow company policy, not only might you burn a bridge, but you might also deprive yourself of termination benefits, such as accrued vacation pay. If you’re leaving at a particularly vulnerable time for your company, consider giving double the minimum notice. But, if you’ve got to go, two weeks is generous enough. Don’t jeopardize your new job or let your current employer exploit you. ~In these examples of how to write a two weeks notice letter, you will note that they do not say much more than you are leaving. Emphasize the positive and talk about how the company has benefited you, but, mention that it’s time to move on. Offer to help during the transition and afterwards. Don’t be negative. There’s no point – you’re leaving and you want to leave on good terms.
Remember not to use the company’s own letterhead, that is in very poor taste! Because this is a document that should be printed, rather than just emailed, choose professional-looking personal stationery, similar to what you would use for a resume or cover letter.
