Garlic
One of the most common food cures, this natural substance that you likely have lying in your kitchen has gone from legend to reality in the pharmaceutical world. There are more than 1,000 different pharmacological studies going on right now that involve garlic’s role in healing our bodies.
Garlic is largely known for helping our hearts. Garlic contains the compound alliin that turns into allicin when you crush or chew the garlic bulbs. Studies find that people who eat a large amount of garlic have a low chance of contracting heart disease. Garlic is also good for fighting colds and the flu, coughs, cuts and scrapes, diarrhea, earaches, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insect bites, sinusitis, sore throats, swimmer’s ear, urinary tract infections and yeast infections.
Baking Soda
Baking soda is widely used as an antacid. It works very quickly and has a variety of different uses. Baking soda can stop your insect bites from itching, it removes plaque from your teeth and can reduce blood acids during dialysis if you have kidney disease.
If you are experiencing heartburn, take a teaspoon or two of baking soda and stir it in a glass of water. After you drink your concoction, you’ll realize what a strong antacid baking soda is. It works faster than many over-the-counter antacids sold in drug stores. You can also use baking soda for athlete’s foot, body odor, canker sores, chicken pox, heat rash, hives, insect bites, indigestion, splinters and sunburns.

If you have a sore throat, perhaps nothing is more soothing than hot tea with honey. Honey kills bacteria and is known for its power to heal wounds. Honey really does not have much nutritional value, but it sure can fight off illness.
Honey is also known as a fast energy source. Some athletes eat a little honey before they take the field or court to energize muscles quickly. Honey can also be used to fight acne, age spots, allergies, coughs and insomnia.
Lemon
Lemon seems to always be a good food to have around the house. Lemon gives you a high amount of vitamin C to boost your immune system. But if you have a cold or the flu, lemon is a great addition to your tea or water. Lemon juice can single handedly reduce your histamine levels. This is the compound that causes you to have a runny nose and seeping eyes. Lemons are also known to help out with body odor, cold sores, heartburn, kidney stones, laryngitis, oily hair and warts.
Mustard
You probably don’t need an expert to tell you that mustard on a hot dog can clear out your sinuses. It isn’t just your imagination. Mustard really does help you breathe more easily when you are feeling stuffed up. Mustard contains myrosin and sinigrin. These are two compounds that tear apart mucus and make you feel better.
Mustard is perhaps one of the best methods of helping you breathe more easily. Hot mustard increases the blood circulation in your chest, which in turn makes it easier for you to inhale and exhale.
If you haven’t been feeling well for some time, eat some mustard. Mustard will stimulate your appetite if you’ve been sick and haven’t felt like eating much. It works its magic by increasing your saliva and the juices in your digestive system, and those juices ask for more food.
Mustard also commonly can fight athlete’s foot, back pain, fevers and headaches.
